Shopping for a new speaker is no longer about just music. Finding a speaker with excellent sound is straightforward. The tried-and-tested audio brands all produce high-end speakers. But these days, most listeners require something a little smarter. This is the age of the smart home, after all.

But smart speakers are saturating the market. You can spend all day scouring product descriptions and review sections to find the best fit for your smart home.

Fear not. We won't let you go to all that hassle. Instead, we compiled a list of what we feel are the best smart speakers you can get right now. But first, here's some important information to help you make a decision.

What is a smart speaker?

Smart speakers usually come with built-in voice assistants and can be found in almost any home at this point. If you have a bunch of smart devices in your home — smart lights, a smart thermostat, smart home security, a smart robot vacuum, or even a smart toaster (yes, that's a real thing) — a smart speaker can act as a hub that keeps them connected and controls your smart home overall. In short, a smart speaker is what makes your home truly smart.

Are smart speakers worth the money?

Although smart speakers aren't always the best way to listen to your audio and aren't usually prioritised for music, they're absolutely worth having if you have the budget. (And you might not even notice the audio downgrade unless you have a finely-tuned audiophile ear.) Plus, smart speakers don't always have to break the bank — there are plenty of budget options out there, including the fantastic Echo Dot.

Why do you need a smart speaker?

The real reason to get a smart speaker is convenience. Hands-free voice assistants are the name of the game when it comes to smart speakers. Being able to plan your day, catch up on news, play music, and control most of your smart tech just by talking to your a speaker is truly excellent. It's a great way to maximise your day by doing less.

What's the best voice assistant?

The three best-know voice assistants are Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Siri. Out of those three, most would put Siri at the bottom. That's not to say that Siri is a bad voice assistant, but Apple is just way too exclusive about their propriety operating systems, and Siri is only available to Apple devices.

Then we get to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It comes down to personal choice. Both Amazon and Google have their specialist skills. You can't really lose with either choice here — just think about what features you want most, and go for the one that fits that vision best.

What skills does Alexa have?

If you're an online shopper and have an arsenal of smart devices throughout your home, Alexa will probably be your best bet. Amazon's smart speakers recognise more devices than Google's Assistant, so you're more likely to have a better time with an Echo if you really want to go for a true smart home.

Alexa's direct connection to the Amazon store also makes online shopping easy, allowing you to add things to your cart and check out solely through voice commands. If you get lots of goods from Amazon, Amazon's smart speakers are a no-brainer.

What can Google Assistant do?

Google Assistant tends to be better at things like general knowledge, location services, and other real-world information that you might need at a moment's notice. Google Assistant is also great for those with Android phones, enabling easy exchanges of information between your smartphone and smart speaker when using Google-supported apps. Google speakers also tend to be better at networking, so if you're looking to buy more than one smart speaker and connect them, Google is a good start.

What is the best smart speaker?

Selecting any sort of speaker is not easy, especially as there are so many devices out there offering similar sets of features. We know it's a tough decision, so we've tried to make your life easier by lining up a selection of the best smart speakers.

We've highlighted the very best smart speakers from top brands, with something for everyone and every budget. You just need to consider the options, and then pick the speaker that best matches up with your set of personal preferences.

These are the best smart speakers in 2023.

Echo Dot

Best For Everyday

The good
Thousands of skills Rich, never-better sound Excellent value Controls other devices Integrates with Amazon devices
The Bad
Not the loudest Better audio available
The Bottomline
Fill your home with music and put Alexa's smart skills to work with this versatile speaker.
Specs
  • Bluetooth: Yes
  • Power: Mains only
  • Smart Assistant: Alexa

Amazon's Echo Dot speaker gets great reviews, and demonstrates how consistently this speaker performs, generation after generation. Indeed, this is the fifth iteration of the Echo Dot this time it and comes with an added bonus — a clock face.

As always with the Echo Dot, you control your music and stream songs from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and other services via voice commands. The Echo Dot produces rich, stereo sound that fills your home with music.

Of course, it's not all about music with the Echo Dot. You can also ask Alexa to answer questions, read the news, check the weather, set alarms, create a shopping list, control compatible smart home devices, and much more.

If nothing else, you'll get hours of entertainment just from talking to Alexa. She's got an answer for (almost) everything.

Sonos One

Best For App

The good
Brilliantly simple app Apple AirPlay compatible Strong, thumping bass Touch controls Trueplay fine tunes to the room
The Bad
Trueplay is iOS only
The Bottomline
The Sonos is a popular smart home option for a reason — it makes listening so easy.
Specs
  • Bluetooth: No
  • Power: Mains only
  • Smart Assistant: Google Assistant and Alexa

First and foremost, you want a speaker that can fill your home with music. The Sonos One has you covered. Its Trueplay software measures the acoustics of the room and fine-tunes the speaker accordingly. In fact. it can fill not one, but two rooms with rich audio. That means serious good vibes in your home.

It has two Class-D amplifiers that deliver continuous sound without any interruption or dropouts. And a 3.5-inch mid-woofer is designed for deep, resonating bass. If you're serious about your tunes, take note. Sonos likes to boast that the One is the smart speaker for true music lovers.

You can control everything using the Sonos app, which consolidates all of your music libraries and playlists. The speaker can also be connected to any smart assistant-enabled devices for voice control.

Google Nest Audio

Best For Google Assistant

The good
Balanced audio Minimalistic look Placement options Alexa alternative
The Bad
Bass is lacking
The Bottomline
If you're a Google Assistant devotee, this is the smart speaker for you.
Specs
  • Bluetooth: Yes
  • Power: Mains only
  • Smart Assistant: Google Assistant

The Google Nest Audio is Google's mid-point offering that sits between the Home Mini and the discontinued Home Max — a beautifully minimalistic speaker that Android users are sure to love.

The Nest Audio produces well-balanced, rich audio — though some reviewers say the bass could use a little work. It also has better-than-ever Google Assistant integration, which is kind of the point with this speaker. Indeed, if you're already a Google Assistant user, the Nest Audio won't let you down.

Of course, it's designed to be just one part of the bigger Google Nest ecosystem, so it will suit anyone who's already got Google Nest devices, or whose home will soon be upgraded with Google-powered tech.

At this price, the size, convenience, and sound quality of the Google Nest Audio easily rivals Amazon's Alexa-compatible speakers. It's a steal at this price.

Apple HomePod Mini

Best For Apple Users

The good
Instant access smart features Fast sync and set-up Excellent sound
The Bad
Apple Music required No Bluetooth
The Bottomline
For Apple users, it's a no-brainer — the best speaker to make use of iOS and the Apple experience.
Specs
  • Bluetooth: No
  • Power: Mains Only
  • Smart Assistant: Siri

While some Apple users will understandably opt for the bigger HomePod, we like the smaller, very affordable HomePod Mini. It's uncharacteristically affordable by Apple standards. And in terms of quality and smart features, we think the HomePod Mini is actually a step up.

If you're an Apple user, it's impressively fast to get up and running. Just hold your iPhone or iPad in its general vicinity and it will connect and sync instantly. And in true Apple style, it's, well, stylish — an attractive, modern design that delivers pristine sound quality.

Where it may fall short is the actual smart features. You get Siri — the voice assistant of choice for many people — but some reviewers have noted that controlling your smart home via its voice command isn't exactly flawless. Like all Apple products, it's best used as part of a system of devices.

Bose Smart Speaker 500

Best For Sound Quality

The good
Excellent audio Voice recognition Music platform integration Radio and playlist presets Apple Airplay compatible
The Bad
Expensive option Fiddly app set-up
The Bottomline
It's pricey, but there's no denying the sheer quality of this awesome-sounding smart speaker.
Specs
  • Bluetooth: Yes
  • Power: Mains only
  • Smart Assistant: Google Assistant and Alexa

No "best speaker" roundup would be complete without Bose, one of the best names in premium audio. The Bose Smart Speaker 500 is a case in point — an audiophile-friendly speaker that matches sound quality with tech smarts.

More than anything, it's about top quality audio. It has two custom speakers that point in opposite directions, achieving a stereo sound without the need for doubling up. It creates a wide, all-immersive soundstage and connects to a variety of streaming services, including Spotify and Amazon Music.

Or maybe you prefer the radio? No problem. The Bose Smart Speaker 500 has preset buttons that allow you to access your favourite stations with one touch. You can talk to Alexa or Google Assistant (both built in) while the music is playing loudly, thanks to eight highly-sensitive microphones in the speaker.

Amazon Echo Studio

Best For Alexa

The good
Three-dimensional sound HD audio support Immersive home cinema experience Thousands of Alexa skills
The Bad
Needs Amazon subscription A bit big for some
The Bottomline
Though dedicated audio brand speakers sound better overall, this is still very good — the best Echo around.
Specs
  • Bluetooth: Yes
  • Power: Mains only
  • Smart Assistant: Alexa

While many homes have the Amazon Echo or Echo Dot, fewer listeners are as familiar with the Amazon Echo Studio. It’s Amazon’s attempt at an audiophile-quality smart speaker. While it doesn’t match the quality of the most serious audio brands (few smart speakers do), the sound is very good indeed.

It supports a range of audio tech formats — such as Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, and Sony 360 Reality Audio — and delivers 3D audio. The 3D sound comes via a combination of directional-firing speakers. Hi-res tunes come courtesy of Amazon Music HD, though that requires a subscription.

Where the Amazon Echo Studio really excels is being hooked up to a home cinema set-up — particularly when you have two Echo Studios and Amazon Fire all connected at once. Being an Amazon device, the Echo Studio also gives you the very best of Alexa and smart home control.

Bang & Olufsen Beosound A1

Best For App Control

The good
Stylish design Incredible sound Alexa integration Intuitive app Multi-point pairing
The Bad
Alexa can be fiddly Premium price
The Bottomline
You'd expect nothing less from B&O — a portable speaker that sounds like a top-of-the-range system.
Specs
  • App: Yes
  • Dimensions: 13 x 4.5 x 13 cm
  • Voice assistant: Yes
  • Weight: 558 grams

The Bang & Olufsen Beosound A1 looks less impressive than its rivals, but it provides high-quality sound. Indeed, it performs way beyond its small stature. The bass is powerful, while the mids and highs are well balanced and the lows are pleasingly crisp. It sounds like a much bigger system, though for true stereo sound you'll need to connect it to a second speaker.

The Beoplay A1 is controlled by an excellent, highly-intuitive app, which gives you the option to cycle through EQ levels and listening modes — the most impressive customisation on this list.

One negative point is that Alexa is limited. Because it's Bluetooth rather than wireless, you need to connect the speaker to a smartphone to use Alexa, and it can't access all of Alexa's features, such as streaming. For most partygoers, however, that's unlikely to be a dealbreaker.
